City of Laurel Open House

This annual event on the first Sunday in March highlights Laurel’s many businesses and civic organizations, including faith-based organizations, environmental, service and community groups, sports and other activities.  It’s a great way to learn more about what Laurel has to offer every family member. This anniversary year, the City of Laurel’s Open House will feature special displays and giveaways for all who attend.

Laurel High School International Night Show

March 6 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Laurel High School students represent 50 countries or more – a true mini United Nations. International Night celebrates this diversity with a medley of music, poetry, song and dance from around the world showcasing ethnic costumes and preceded by an International Flags ceremony. Featured student performers will include members of the African, Hispanic, and Caribbean student associations and honor societies. Poetry and story readings in the intimate Black Box theater beside the auditorium add to the evenings’ cultural richness.

Digging up the 1995 Time Capsule

Before we create a new time capsule, we’ll discover how the one buried during the 125th Anniversary survived. Join us as we dig up the two time capsules buried 6 feet deep in the front lawn of the Laurel Museum in 1995.  Public Works will do the digging – and we’ll discover how the capsule weathered the past quarter century.

150th Anniversary 5K Run/Walk Benefiting Diabetes Awareness

Patuxent River Clean Up

April 4 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us at the pavilions at Riverfront Park where volunteers will be issued tools and equipment to help remove trash and debris from the river bank and the adjoining parkland. This volunteer effort is part of a State wide program coordinated by the Patuxent River Keepers to help improve the water quality and flow of the Patuxent River and the surrounding Chesapeake watershed   All ages welcome.

Laurel Main Street Festival

Sponsored by the Laurel Board of Trade, Laurel’s most-anticipated Main Street event, the Main Street Festival, begins at 9 am with a parade. Join the 300+ vendors including local Main Street merchants and local organizations lining the street. who offer food, crafts, family-friendly activities, direct sales and more. Musical entertainment featuring many different styles from local and non-local bands on multiple stages add to the day’s festivities.

National Kids to Parks Day

Any school aged child 12 and under who completes a full lap around the Granville Gude Lake path on this date during Lakehouse operating hours will receive one free boating pass to use any time during the current season.  Register at the Lakehouse concession window.  Boating rules and regulation apply.

Bike Decorating Parade

June 5 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Bring the whole family for some old fashioned fun!  Elementary aged kids can decorate their bikes and scooters inside the Laurel Armory and then join in the parade on Montgomery Street. Presented by the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Laurel Police Department. Decorations will be provided and an ice cream social follows the parade. Helmets must be worn.

Laurel Trivia Night

The Laurel History Boys will host another lively and fun trivia contest all about Laurel’s history. Some sample questions from previous trivia nights: What local planned city—other than Greenbelt—came before Columbia and Reston? Name the actor who played the resident leprechaun at Delaney’s. Laurel Independence Day Celebration

The Laurel Independence Day Celebration started over 40 years ago with a question from a little girl to then Mayor Robert DiPietro….why didn’t Laurel have fireworks? Emancipation Day Celebration

Holiday Harvest Food Drive

Help a neighbor in need this holiday season. Donate a bag of holiday food items and/or a $25 gift card to a local grocery or department store. LARS will provide holiday meal baskets to over 250 Laurel families and seniors in need this holiday season. Helpful items include canned vegetables, canned yams, cranberry sauce, cornbread mix, fresh or canned fruit, gravy, frozen ham/turkey/chicken, instant potatoes, nuts, pie filling/crust, rice, and stuffing. Holiday Festival & Armory Illumination

Kick off the holiday season with our annual Holiday Parade, Holiday festival and Armory Illumination! Santa and Friends will be in our Winter Wonderland for pictures and visits! Show your spirit and join our holiday parade as a spectator or participant. Parade applications are available at our local community centers and Municipal Center. The Holiday Parade steps off at 3:30PM from the Municipal Center, our Holiday Festival begins approx. 4PM at the Armory and the Armory Lighting is approx. 5:30PM!
